What companies are hiring HR Ops to do

Seven in ten need someone to own data accuracy and audit readiness.

In September 2026 I analyzed 276 live HR Ops job ads and counted what companies said they need the role to do, in their own words. The same handful came up over and over. If one of them is on your desk and there's nobody to give it to, that's what I take on, at a fixed scope.

73%need HR Ops to keep employee data accurate"ensuring 100% accuracy in employee records"
70%need audit readiness owned: I-9, classification, retention, SOC"complete, defensible, audit-ready, and compliant"
54%need people reporting leaders can act on"those numbers take too long to produce and they don't always agree with each other"
52%need manual work automated"manual work, one-off spreadsheets, and rework"
49%need the processes written down"you won't be inheriting a playbook; you'll be writing it"
48%need onboarding and offboarding to run without hand-work"zero manual rekey from offer acceptance through Day 1"

Percentages are the share of 276 postings whose own text named that responsibility; quotes are verbatim from the postings. The top two came up at a high rate in every source. The other four vary a lot by job board (onboarding ranges from 16% to 92% depending on where you look), so read them as directional. Sources: Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, Workable, Built In, employer career pages and staffing-agency boards, read 11 to 13 September 2026. Indeed and LinkedIn are not included. Some things I've built

Thirteen years of building what wasn't there.

Since 2013 I've been drawn to exactly one thing: building something where there was nothing before.

A corporate university. A reporting suite. A handbook nobody had written. A key account function that didn't exist. An app. A little agent that catches payroll errors before payday. It started as the part of every job I'd volunteer for, and somewhere along the way I noticed it was the only part I actually looked forward to.

So I've stopped treating it as a side effect of my job and made it the whole job. Partly because I'm good at it. Mostly for the pure joy of it.

Have a look at what that's produced ↗

The payroll agent has its write-up. The other two stories are being written and will link from here when they're up; the short versions are in the list below.

Audit, compliance and data you can trust

What the Audit-Ready and HRIS Cleanup packages are built on.

SOC 2 alignment of HR operationsBehavox · US, Canada, UK, APAC · ~3 monthsSecurity needed HR controls and evidence to pass a SOC 2 audit. I mapped the people processes to the requirements, closed the gaps and built the evidence trail, so the audit did not stall on HR.Gaps closed, standards met - Head of Security Assurance
BambooHR data model and QA controlsBehavox · 4 countries, one HRIS · ~2 months, then ongoingFinance could not rely on headcount and cost reports because the HRIS disagreed with itself. I redesigned the data model and added automated checks that flag records drifting, so every downstream report and the Finance integration ran clean.“Every downstream report trustworthy” - Head of Finance
Payroll provider switch and insurance rolloutBehavox · multi-country · ~3 monthsMoved the company to a new payroll provider and rolled out insurance programs across jurisdictions on schedule, with Finance signing off at each step.Delivered with Finance - Head of Finance
People Ops through an M&A integrationBehavox · two companies, two record sets · ~6 monthsTwo employee populations, two policy sets, two systems. I led People Ops through the integration to one function, one HRIS and one set of policies, so leadership had one headcount number. One function on the other side
Vendor and contingent workforce managementBehavox · global · built once, run for yearsContractors and vendors were engaged ad hoc, with classification and cost risk nobody owned. I built the selection, compliance and cost-control process end to end and owned it.Classification and spend under control

Onboarding, training and documentation

What the Onboarding Rebuild and Compliance Training packages are built on.

Behavox UniversityBehavox · US, Canada, UK, APAC · built in ~1 year, ran 4A fast-growing company with no training function. I built the curriculum, courses and delivery from nothing, so new hires reached productivity in half the time and managers stopped re-explaining the basics.150+ onboarded, ramp time down ~50%
LMS implementationBehavox · company-wide · ~3 monthsTraining assignment and tracking was manual and nobody could prove who had completed what. I implemented the LMS and automated assignment, reminders and reporting.90% completion on company-wide learning
HR service deskBehavox · global, with Legal, Finance, IT and Security · ~2 monthsEmployee questions arrived through every channel with no owner or SLA. I built the intake, the SLAs and the knowledge base, so most questions got answered once, in writing, and the rest had a queue. One queue, written answers, SLAs in place

Automation and reporting

The work that gives a People team its hours back.

Promotion and equity letter automationBehavox · global · ~3 weeksEvery cycle, the team hand-generated dozens of letters and forms one by one. I automated the whole dataflow from HRIS to signed document, so a cycle's paperwork became one run.50+ documents in minutes instead of days; “10x investment returns” - client
Executive people reportingBehavox · for the CEO, COO and Finance · ~2 monthsNo people reporting existed; leadership questions were answered by hand. I built the reporting suite from scratch, then automated it, so the monthly numbers were ready without anyone assembling them by hand.Built from scratch, then automated - Head of Finance
Payroll anomaly agentIndependent build · any HRIS + payroll · ~3 weeksPayroll review means a human scanning hundreds of rows for the four that changed. The agent compares each register to the last cycle three days before payday and flags what changed without a reason on file.8 checks, one page of flags - read the build note
Apps Script tools for HR teamsClients in North America and Australia · ~1 week eachHR teams with no engineering support, doing BambooHR field mapping, bulk document generation and client folder setup by hand. I built Google Sheets tools that do it in a click. One client came back three times

Durations are approximate. The numbers are the ones I can evidence, most of them in the reviews below. On my own time I also ship products - an iOS app in the App Store, a daily brief for HR leaders - which is how the building muscle stays sharp.

Need something that isn't on this list?

That's completely normal. Just tell me what's going wrong and what you wish happened instead. I'll come back within two days with a plan and a price. If it's not something I should be doing, I'll tell you that too, and point you somewhere better.

Or start with something small.

Not everything needs a month. These take a week or less, and they're an easy way to see how I work before you commit to anything bigger.

Not sure where to start?

Most people aren't. Describe the mess in your own words and I'll tell you what I'd do about it. Worst case you get a free second opinion.

The process

Three steps, and no surprises in any of them.

We agree what I'm building and what it costs before I start. I build it, write it all down, walk your team through it, and then I'm out of your hair. Whoever you hire next inherits something that works.

1

A 30-minute call

You tell me what's going wrong. I ask what your systems actually look like underneath. It's free, and you'll get a straight answer on whether this is even worth doing.

2

A plan and a price, in two days

One page: what I'll build, how long it takes, what it costs, and the little I need from your team. You say yes or no. I won't chase you either way.

3

Build and hand over

I work async with a weekly check-in, so I'm not in your calendar. At the end you get the thing, the documentation, and a walkthrough of how it all works.

Before you write in

The questions I get before the first call.

How much does an HRIS cleanup cost?

USD 10,000 for a three-to-four-week sprint: every employee record audited against source documents, duplicates and gaps resolved, a reporting layer that pulls clean, and the written process that keeps it that way. Fixed price, no hourly billing.

How long does it take to get audit-ready?

Four to five weeks for a company under 500 people. That covers I-9 and E-Verify, records retention, worker classification, a full SOP library for the people function, and an HRIS data audit - delivered with a handover pack so your next hire can run it.

Can I hire a consultant instead of a full-time HR Ops manager?

For a bounded problem, usually faster. Hiring an HR Ops manager takes roughly three months. A fixed-scope project delivers the system in four to six weeks, and you keep the documentation whether or not you hire afterwards. Doing both works well - the project first, the hire later, into a function that already runs.

What if my project isn't on your list?

Describe it and you'll get a written scope and a fixed quote within 48 hours. Most HR operations work turns out to be bounded once somebody has actually looked at it, and if yours isn't, I'll say so rather than stretch it into a package.

Which HR systems do you work in?

BambooHR in depth, plus Rippling, HiBob, Gusto, Justworks and Workday. Payroll across US and Canadian jurisdictions. Where a system genuinely can't do what's needed, I build the automation around it rather than pretending the gap isn't there.

Where are you based?

Remote, on US Eastern time, working async with distributed teams across North America, the UK and APAC. Overlap with a US team is the whole working day.

What do you need from my team?

Read access to your HRIS, one person who can answer questions the same day, and about two hours of their time in week one. That's it. The proposal spells this out before you commit.

Say hello

So, what's going wrong?

A few sentences is plenty. I read everything properly and come back within two days, either with a plan and a price or an honest "this isn't me, try these people instead".
